Karla offers 3 yoga classes, and 1 QiGong each week at the Yoga Center of Columbia. All classes are currently hybrid: you can attend in person, or online.
Gentle Yoga
Saturdays, 9:00-10:15 am
This class offers many adaptations and accommodations and is suitable for anyone who is able to get up and down from the floor. Yoga poses will consist of standing, seated, and poses lying on the floor. Breath work and meditation are included in every class. Props are often used, but not required.
Yoga for Healthy Bones and Joints
Tuesdays, 9:30-10:45 am
Fridays, 9:30-11 am
This class consists of a warm up that moves through all the joints in the body to lubricate and bring more ease. Then the class moves into yoga poses designed to improve bone density in the bones most commonly injured in those with Osteoporosis (hip, back, wrist). The bone strengthening poses come from the work of Dr. Loren Fishman, who is studying the effect of yoga on increasing bone density. Adaptations and accommodations are offered. This class is appropriate for anyone with any type of arthritis, Osteopenia, and/or Osteoporosis.
QiGong
Thursdays, 6:30-7:30 pm
As of May 2024, I am also a certified Holden QiGong teacher. QiGong is an ancient Chinese practice that combines energy work, breathing, stretching, and flowing movements designed to release stress, increase energy, and improve overall health. The practice is mostly done standing, but can easily be adapted to be done seated so all levels are welcome. Wear comfortable clothing that you can move in.
Yoga Nidra
Monthly Yoga Nidra workshops are offered online and in the studio. This is a meditative practice that involves the student lying down in a relaxed and comfortable position. Karla then guides students through a carefully planed series of experiences including: establishment of a safe space, finding and setting an intention, relaxing every part of the body, and a healing journey in the imagination.
Testimonials
In her role as a yoga teacher, I find Karla to be a knowledgeable, proficient, and compassionate instructor who brings her life experience to the yoga mat and to her classes. Her gentle yoga classes tend to be filled with older adults, all of whom have aches and pains and some body part or other that doesn’t work today (or maybe ever), and Karla regularly rises to the challenge, offering accommodations, encouragement, and acceptance in her very gentle and loving way. Her Yoga Nidra workshops are always fresh, creative, and centering–her monthly offerings are a must-do on my calendar. -Maryellen
